Vinterferie 2008

Her på den sørlige halvkule har vi akkurat hatt tre fantastiske uker med vinterferie. Det hele startet tidlig på morgenen den 22. juni da vi tok i mot Elisabeth, Einar og Hetty på flyplassen i Sydney. De virket opplagte og i god form etter to netter på fly, så vi dro ned til Darling Harbour og spiste den første av mange gode måltider. Vi hadde en uke i Sydney med fint Australsk vintervær og fikk gjort nesten alt som bør gjøres i den fine byen. Vi tok båt til Manley Beach, gikk 900 trappetrinn på tur i Blue Mountains, spiste middag i Sydney Tower, IMAX-kino i Darling Harbour og togtur i Botanical Garden. Prikken over i-en var My Fair Lady på operascenen i Sydney Opera House i anledning Elisabeths 60-årsdag og Hettys 65-årsdag.
Neste dag var vi tidlig oppe for fly til Airlie Beach på østkysten av Australia. Den lille byen ligger i tropene og vi fikk en uke med sydenvarme. Etter en natt på hostell skulle vi ut og seile rundt Withsundays Islands. Ganske spente etter å ha hørt mange historier om fulle backpackere på partybåter ble vi ettet da vi så at det satt en familie med tre barn som skulle på samme båt som oss. Det ble tre herlige dager og MS Kiana viste seg å gi oss mye mer enn det vi hadde forventet. Mannskapet var supert, maten var god, de andre gjestene kjempehyggelige og Stillehavet var så stille at man kunne speile seg i sjøen. Vi fikk gå i land på Witeheaven Beach som er kåret til en av verdens top 10 vakreste strender - vi hadde 7 km strand helt for oss selv! Resten av turen tilbrakte vi ute på Bait Reef som er en del av Great Barrier Reef. Karl og jeg fikk prøvd å dykke og alle de tre sportye foreldrene våre tok på seg fullt stingersuit-utstyr og snorklet rundt båten. Tilbake i Airlie Beach var det slutt på backpackerlivet og vi flyttet inn i en stor leilighet med en ubeskrivelig utsikt! Etter mange inntrykk passet det fint med noen late dager med lange frokoster og leking i bassenget. Ekstra eksotisk ble det da vi fikk besøk av en flokk kakaduer på balkongen vår den siste dagen!
Det ble litt antiklimaks å komme til Brisbane der det var kaldt og vått, men leiligheten til foreldrene våre i 39. etg Festival Towers gjorde det hele bra igjen. Hetty og Elisabeth svømte hver formiddag mens Einar dro på butikken og kjøpte inn varer til en bedre lunsj. Vi gjorde alt sakte denne uka og koste oss med turer i byen, i botanisk hage eller langs elva. Det var til og med plass til en hviledag eller to. Karl hadde begynt på skolen igjen, men tok seg tid til å dra til Lone Pine og kose med Koala:) Vi fikk også dratt på biltur i Saaben (også kjent som “silver hornet”) opp til Mount Coo Tah for å se på utsikten over byen og spise en bedre middag. Den siste helga inviterte vi alle vennene våre på grillparty i Festival Towers og det ble en riktig så hyggelig kveld. Litt vemodig med den siste middagen langs elva og da vi dro ut til flyplassen for å si hadet. Heldigvis ser vi dere igjen til jul!!
