Turen vaar til India startet i delstaten Kerala der Karl, Preben og jeg ble hentet av Sid og Ruben paa flyplassen i Cochin. Vi hadde hoert mye som Kerala foer vi kom. Det er en fattig stat, men likevel har de ett av de beste utdanningssystemene. Alle barn gaar paa skole noe som medfoerer at nesten 100% kan lese og skrive. Dette er i sterk konstrast til India som helhet der 65% kan det samme. Mange utdannes videre som leger eller ingenioerer og flytter for eksempel til Midt-Oesten for aa finne jobb. Den stoerste inntektskilden til Kerala er pengene som disse personene sender hjem for aa sikre familien og sin egen pensjonisttilvaerelse. Da vi mellomlandet i Mumbai ble vi fortalt en ting til “Her i India kaller vi det ikke Kerala, vi kaller det Paradis”.
Allerede paa veien fra flyplassen til Cochin by fikk vi virkelig opplevelsen av aa vaere i et annet land. Luktene, trafikken, menneskene og ikke minst maten. Vi spiste frokost paa noe som i vaare oyne saa ganske slitent ut, men som vi naa synes er akkurat saann som det skal vaere. Sid og Ruben soerget for at maten ikke var saa sterk og for at vi fikk gaffel. Det med krydderet var greit, men gaffel ville vi jo ikke ha. Naar alle andre spiste med hendene ville vi ogsaa. Vi fomlet enn del i begynnelsen, men naa gaar det helt automatisk. Det er verdt et forsoek aa spise middag med med hendene (helst bare hoyre), det gir en ekstra tilskudd til smaksopplevelsen at man ogsaa kjenner paa maten foer man spiser den.
Litt senere den foerste dagen hentet vi Elias paa flyplassen, et gutt fra Colombia som vi ogsaa studerer med i Brisbane. Vi bodde i et privat hjem som leier ut rom. Huset laa like ved vannkanten paa en bitteliten groenn og idyllisk oy. Dagen etter kjorte vi til Allepey der onkelen til Ruben guidet oss en flott husbaat som skulle vaere hjemmet vaart de neste 24 timene. The Backwaters i Kerala viste seg aa vaere helt utrolig vakkert. Groent og frodig saa langt oyet kunne se uansett om vi var paa innsjoen, i elvene eller en av de bittesmaa smugene. Og overalt bodde det folk i vannkanten som drev med sitt. Vi tok mange bilder og jeg haaper vi faar lagt ut noen.
Vel tilbake nesten morgen satte vi nesen mot Munnar som ligger oppe i fjellene. Hotellet var et gammelt klubbhus fra den engelske kolonitiden og alt var som det alltid hadde vaert med tunge skinnmoebler, golfbane, eget rom for kortspill og en bar der bare menn fikk komme inn. Omraadet der er kjent for plantasjene sine og vi fikk sett hvordan de dyrker te, sukker og pepper - en laererik opplevelse for tre normenn som kun har sett de faerdige produktene i butikkhylla. Den siste natten i Kerala hadde vi i Cochin igjen og vi var klare for aa dra til Bengaluru som er hjembyen til baade Sid og Ruben.
