Etter noen veldig avslappende dager i staten Kerala, hadde vi bestemt oss for at vi ville føle litt mer på hvordan det er å være inder. Vi bestemte oss derfor for å skille oss fra fiffen som bruker penger på å fly, og heller ta toget til Bangalore (som etter nylig omgjøring heter Bengaluru). Skal det gjøres så skal det gjøres orntlig, så vi valgte også bort aircondition på den 12 timer lange togturen under Indias stekende sol. Selv om vår vogn ikke hadde aircondition, var det ikke så ille som man skulle tro. Det var høy luftfuktighet og rundt 30 grader, ja vel, men det var mye “gammedags” aircondition i og med at vinduene var uten glass, alle dørene sto vidåpne hele turen og taket var totalt dekket av vifter. Vi var de eneste hvite vi så på hele den 12 timers lange turen og vi fikk virkelig føle hvordan det var å ta toget som inder.
Da vi ankom Bangalore om kvelden merket vi fort at tempoet var annerledes enn i fredfulle Kerala. Vårt første møte med Bangalore etter utgangen fra togstasjonen var indisk trafikk. Trafikk vi hadde hørt mye om fra våre indiske venner. Det var en fire-felts vei med syv biler i bredden ispedd mopeder og syklister der det fantes luker og små åpninger i trafikkbildet. Denne veien skulle vi krysse. Første forsøk endte med at inderne våre halte oss tilbake til fortauet etter at vi var halvveis over. For farlig akkurat nå ja. Vi kom oss over med alt pikpakket vårt på andre forsøk. Men trafikken som ved første øyekast virket så rotete viste seg å være svært så effektivt da vi senere satt på mens inderne våre ålet seg gjennom hva som virket som en stillestående trafikkork.
Etter en lang togtur var det godt å komme hjem til Ruben sin familie i det posh’e strøket av Bangalore. Vi fikk møte hans far, hans mor og hans søster. De tok godt imot oss og vi fikk bo i huset deres og ble vartet opp som indere behandler sine gjester. Moren til Sid ville også varte oss opp litt, så vi bodde litt hos henne også. Det var en stor opplevelse å få bo i et indisk hjem sammen med familiene til gutta som vi har blitt kjent med i et annet miljø her i Australia. Ruben er for eksempel glad i en fest mens familiens hans i India er totalt avholdsfolk. Sid har en kjæreste som faren ikke vet om, for han har kanskje en plan om at Sid skal gifte seg med en annen. Arrangerte ekteskap er vanskelig i forstå seg på når man kommer fra Norge.
I Bangalore fikk vi sett tradisjonell indisk dans på et kulturhus og Slumdog Millionaire på kino. Og i Bangalore var det billig. I tillegg var det januarsalg. Det heftigste salget vi så var “Buy 1, get 4 free”. Så vi gikk litt av hektene og kjøpte klær nedsatt med 65% på Nike-butikken, nye Adidas løpesko og Preben kjøpte til og med en tennisracket. Jeg gleder meg til spille tennis med ham i Australia.
